Paris Operası’nın başrol oyuncusu Carlotta bir hayaletin onu işi Christine adlı koro elemanına bırakması için tehdit ettiğini iddia ederek işi bırakır. Operadakiler buna inanmazken, Christine yüzünü maske ardına saklayan bu gizemli kişiyle tanışmıştır bile.Operanın yönetmeni Raoul ile birlikte olan Christine, hayaletin isteği üzerine ondan ayrılır. Hayalet ile sık sık yeraltında buluşan Christine, bu küçük sırrı tüm operadan saklarken, onu keşfetmeye başlamıştır.Sessiz olarak çekilen film, Gaston Leroux’un romanından uyarlanmış ve o yıllarda oldukça ses getirmişti.
